In 2026, legendary trumpeter Miles Davis would have turned 100. To honor this milestone, Metropole Orkest, conducted by Jules Buckley, pays tribute to two of his defining 1980s albums: Tutu and Amandla. These groundbreaking works fused jazz with funk, R&B, pop, and rock, bringing Miles’ sound to a new generation and expanding his reach to a younger audience.
Joining the orchestra are two artists closely connected to Davis’ legacy: Marcus Miller, the bassist, producer, composer and arranger behind Tutu and Amandla and former member of Miles Davis’ comeback band in the early 1980s, and John Beasley, the acclaimed pianist, arranger, and former member of Davis’ 1989 band.
Miller’s collaboration with Davis in the mid-1980s sparked a bold new direction for the trumpeter’s sound, resulting in these landmark albums. Beasley, a remarkably versatile musician with firsthand experience performing this repertoire on tour with Davis, brings a vital perspective and a deeply personal voice to this reimagining.
This performance is not a replica of the original recordings but a contemporary re-envisioning in the spirit of Miles himself: layered, dynamic, and open to exploration. The combination of these singular artists with the lush, genre-blurring sound of Metropole Orkest promises a truly unique musical experience.
A celebration of Miles Davis, who forever changed the course of modern music, and a must for fans of jazz, funk, soul, and everything in between.
