“There should be no doubt that the music of Donny Hathaway inspired generations of music lovers across the globe, myself included. He showed us his humanity, and created so many wonderful forms and colors. His music quite simply entered my soul at an early age and became part of my process as a composer and musician. But in addition Donny’s recordings and the people who made them (most notably his producer Arif Mardin and the talented musicians that were his core rhythm section) continue to be a guiding influence on the daily workings of the Metropole Orkest as we put together our performances. We constantly talk about how to approach the grooves, the emotion and gravitational pull of the Blues, and the practice of creating beautiful frames in which to place a story that enters the hearts of our listeners. This music gave us a path. Thank you, Donny.”
