Metropole Orkest & Roberto Fonseca
New Year's concerts
Jules Buckley, dirigent
Roberto Fonseca, piano
Metropole Orkest, conducted by Jules Buckley, and the acclaimed Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca will join forces to start of 2020 in festive fashion.
Roberto Fonseca draws on a wide range of musical traditions and genres. Coming from a musical family the Havana-born artist mixes Cuban and African music styles with jazz and elements from classical music. After having toured extensively with the Buena Vista Social Club, Roberto went on to conquer the world with his own music, leading to a Grammy nomination for his album ‘YO’ (2012) and critical acclaim for his collaboration ‘At Home’ with Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara. With the Metropole Orkest (MO) Roberto will also be performing music from his latest album ‘ABUC’, a celebration of Cuban music, from yesterday to today. MO Chief Conductor Jules Buckley: “Roberto is a masterful pianist and he, much like the Metropole Orkest, creates new and exciting music with a profound understanding and love for tradition and his own musical heritage.”
In return, Roberto Fonseca is proud to work with the Metropole Orkest. “They are a Grammy winning ensemble combining a jazz big band with a symphony orchestra. The musicians are uniquely experienced in playing latin styles and world music. I am honored to play this New Year concert with them.”
