Wrapped In Rhythm, Vol. II – Tutu Puoane & Metropole Orkest

Following the success of Wrapped In Rhythm, Vol. I (March 2024) the orchestral sequel Wrapped In Rhythm, Vol. II was released today. This new album by Tutu Puoane and Metropole Orkest, conducted by Jacomo Bairos, once again brings to life the powerful poetry of South African poet Lebo Mashile.

The music was written and created by vocalist Tutu Puoane and pianist/composer Ewout Pierreux, inspired by Mashile’s collection In A Ribbon Of Rhythm. Her poetry offers an intimate and profound perspective on the life and emotions of a young Black woman from South Africa’s first post-Apartheid generation. For Tutu, encountering these texts felt like coming home, recognition that translated into music.

While the first part of the project was recorded with Tutu’s own band, Volume II gains a new dimension through the unique combination of strings and big band sounds of the Metropole Orkest. The repertoire was specially arranged for this ensemble by Belgian trumpet player, composer and arranger Bert Joris.

The result is a compelling musical journey: from the romanticism of a string orchestra to the explosive energy of a big band, with Tutu’s voice at the heart, telling, improvising, and moving listeners. Wrapped In Rhythm, Vol. II marks the culmination of a project Tutu has carried with her for over a decade, now finding its ultimate form in collaboration with the Metropole Orkest.
